Okay, peeps. Time to talk about my all-time favorite holiday beer: Tröegs Mad Elf! I can’t pretend that this beer isn’t polarizing here at Barley Babes Inc. While I think it should be declared our national beverage, Maddy has been known to gag if she takes too large a sip.
The Mad Elf is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, and in my opinion, it tastes just as a winter seasonal should; it’s boozy, a tad spicy, and packs strong dark fruit flavors (particularly cherry). Its 11% ABV is both a blessing and a curse. After only a few sips of Mad Elf you’ll feel warm and fuzzy, but you have to be very careful about how many you drink. (Always beware the mistletoe.)
If you don’t typically like strong, boozy beers, approach the Mad Elf with caution. Start by splitting one with a friend, or ask for a sample if you find it on draft. As for me, I’d rather have one Mad Elf than two turtle doves any day of the week. 😉 Happy Monday!
