When I first came across this chocolate peanut butter porter I was like, come again? Chocolate and peanut butter is my all-time favorite culinary combination. It means more to me than pizza and beer, milk and cereal, or coffee with cream. At first I was totally turned off by the thought of an alcoholic Reese’s cup, but as the Sweet Baby Jesus! popped up on draft list after draft list and in beer shop after beer shop, I knew I had to try it.
Although I was disappointed by this brew overall, the smell is nothing short of phenomenal. I took a big whiff upon pouring and could have bet my life that I was standing over a bowl of Baskin Robbins Peanut Butter ‘n Chocolate ice cream. Unfortunately, the beer peaked with the smell. While I definitely tasted the chocolate and espresso flavors that often appear in porters, I didn’t detect the peanut butter. Additionally, considering that chocolate and peanut butter is such a rich, decadent combination, I expected a richer, fuller-bodied beer. The medium-bodied, mildly carbonated, Sweet Baby Jesus! fell flat for me. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t pack the flavor punch that I expected.
DuClaw boasts many unusual brews: a chocolate chipotle stout, toffee nut brown ale, and blueberry citrus wheat, just to name a few. I’d definitely like to try more of their creative combinations, but when it comes to chocolate and peanut butter, I’ll get my fix elsewhere. –R
